If you are a Hindu Indian American like me, please DO NOT join the United States Patent & Trademark Office, because you will face religious discrimination!
I have been a Primary Examiner in the 2800 Tech Center at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for more than 12 years. There are hundreds of of Indian American Patent Examiners in Tech Center 2800 and most of them are Hindu and NONE of them will ever be promoted to Director, see the picture above, see the names of the TC 2800 directors, see that there are four directors and two are from India and neither of them is Hindu, in fact they are both named Thomas, do you think this is a coincidence ?
The fact is that USPTO Human Resources selects candidates for promotion based on Religion and the religious discrimination is so bad that Joe Biden had to appoint a Hindu Vaishali Udupa as Director of Patents, but do not be fooled, Vaishali was appointed, she was not promoted, and Hindus at the USPTO have a glass ceiling. Right now there are two Thomases from India as Director. Soon will all the Thomases from India will be promoted to Director and will the signature below read Thomas, Thomas, Thomas and Thomas ? I request President Joe Biden to end the glass ceiling for Hindus at the United States Patent and Trademark Office!
Below, in this post, you will hear a lot of things that I experienced at the USPTO. Most recently, I was being considered for promotion to the Central Reexamination Unit, but after I posted this page, and this page, the Director of the CRU David Ruschke said that he doesn’t want to interview me anymore. So if I talk about how the USPTO committed racism and fraud when rejecting my patent application, then I will not get promoted at the USPTO! Actually I knew that the CRU doesn’t want any PhDs like me in the CRU anyway, so I knew I wasn’t really being considered for the promotion!

Director Joseph Thomas from India (who is not Hindu) dumped a dozen Continuation-in-part cases with 70 parents on me and told me in a Teams meeting that he has the right to harass me because he is using a computer program to harass me, and then my supervisor Britt Hanley told me he would fire me if I didn’t stop talking about it on this website, read more below.
I sent a letter to my Senator John Cornyn complaining about the religious discrimination faced by Indian Americans at the United States Patent and Trademark Office but he did not even bother to respond to me!
Hurricane Beryl hits Texas on July 8th 2024
The most recent harassment I received from Director Joseph Thomas and my supervisor Britt Hanley occurred a few days ago. See the pictures below and then I will explain below that. In the email below from Britt Hanley, the “Director” is Joseph Thomas. Below that is my Timesheet for the pay period of June 30th to July 13th.
Hurricane Beryl passed through Houston and surrounding cities a few days ago, and it knocked out power to at least 2.6 Million households including my house. I lost power for 36 hours from 4:30 AM Monday July 8th to 4:45 PM Tuesday July 9th, and so I could not work on these two days. The federal government does allow employees hit by natural disasters to take other time but Director Joseph Thomas and my supervisor Britt Hanley used this opportunity to harass me.
As you can see in the email, I reported that I could not work for a total of 16 hours i.e. 8 hours on Monday and 8 hours on Tuesday, but Britt Hanley (after consulting with Director Joseph Thomas) said I cannot get 16 hours of other time for the Hurricane Beryl, I am only being offered 8 hours for Monday July 8th and 2 hours for Tuesday July 9th, and that I have to work overtime on Wednesday July 10th to Saturday July 13 to “make up” the remaining 6 hours. I think this is the shit management strategy of Director Joseph Thomas and I am going to complain to my member of Congress and also to Janet Yellen who is the Commerce Secretary.
See my Timesheet above, see that on July 9th I had to put 6 hours of vacation time to compensate for the 6 hours other time that Director Joseph Thomas refused to approve even though Congress gives federal employees this time when we cannot work during natural disasters such as Hurricane Beryl. This is hateful behavior by Director Joseph Thomas and he is doing this to harass me because I am Hindu and because Joseph Thomas thinks he is better than me because he is not Hindu. The USPTO encourages Joseph Thomas to be hateful to Hindus, because in the Semiconductor 2800 Tech Center we have hundreds of Examiners from India, and most of us are Hindu, yet the USPTO promoted Joseph Thomas to Director specifically because he is from India but he is not Hindu, this is clear religious discrimination.
See the CNN video above which was 4 days after Beryl hit Houston, Texans like me were hit hard by Beryl and so many Texans were without power for a lot more than 36 hours and everybody suffered some losses but Director Joseph Thomas thinks he is the “King of the Hindus”, so he can harass us in the USPTO. It is illegal for Director Joseph Thomas to say that I have to work more than 8 hours a day or to say that I have to work on Saturday (which is a weekend) in order to compensate for time lost due to a natural disaster i.e. Hurricane Beryl. The reason Director Joseph Thomas is doing this shit is that he wants to prove that he is a tough guy, but Congress specifically gave federal employees the right to claim lost time for natural disasters, in this case Hurricane Beryl. I will ask Commerce Secretary Janet Yellen or the office of President Biden to intervene and help us federal employees from this shit that Director Joseph Thomas is doing.
This is not the first time Director Joseph Thomas harassed me after a natural disaster, Director Joseph Thomas and my then supervisor Steven Loke harassed me in February 11-20, 2021 when Texas went through a huge freeze, we had no power, no heat, no food, no water for days (even the local HEB was empty) and when I applied for other time, my then supervisor Steven Loke refused and when I asked him why, Steven Loke said Director Joseph Thomas i.e. his manager said that he, Steven Loke should refuse other time to me. Even then I had to use vacation time on my Timesheet and then I complained to POPA and Kathleen Duda who was the Director of POPA at that time intervened and managed to get me a few days of other time for natural disasters. Even then Director Joseph Thomas and Steven Loke were very hateful to me. I wish Congress would stop this religious harassment at the USPTO, it is just dirty behavior.
I first realized that I was being harassed several years ago, when I was in Art Unit 2818 with Supervisor Steven Loke and after I repeatedly complained about it for several years, he (with the help of Director Joseph Thomas) transferred me to newly formed Art Unit 2893 without even telling me, you see, normally the Supervisor asks for volunteers to transfer to a new group such as Art Unit 2893 but Steven Loke did not like that I was complaining about discrimination, so instead of asking for volunteers, he just suggested my name for transfer to the newly formed Art Unit 2893, you can look at the ethnicities of who is in Art Unit 2818 right now (you can search it on google) reporting to Supervisor Steven Loke and you will see which Examiners Steven wanted to keep in Art Unit 2818 and you will know why he did not want me there !
